Targeted Training for Faster Promotions

Responsibly Charismatic

PBT Program Goals Header 6

Personal Business Trainer identifies seven traits of high performance individuals that allow them to achieve excellence in contribution to their businesses. It is this excellence in contribution that leads to enhanced opportunities within the company and faster promotions.

These seven traits are Exemplary Leader, Notably Insightful, Massively Confident, Quickly Decisive, Responsibly Charismatic, Results Rainmaker, and Success Driver. Each of these traits is treated separately within the pages tied to “PBT Program Goals”.

RESPONSIBLY CHARISMATIC

Most of us have experienced quite a few leaders in our lives – some of them good and some of them not-so-good.  The good ones gain that rating through demonstrating excellence in a variety of areas.  The not-so-good ones often lose status due to substantial underperformance in a single area.  This idea of needing to demonstrate skills at a minimum level in a large number of performance areas substantiates the use of seven traits in the PBT model that employs targeted training for faster promotions.

One of the traits that may be underestimated by aspiring young leaders is likeability, which is basically the ability to connect with those around you in a friendly, social, and positive way.  People enjoy being around those that are uplifting and gracious and fun.  Likewise, people shy away from people that are grouches, downers and punitive.

Charisma is a term used frequently to describe people that are attractors, i.e. they gather others toward them.  Officially defined, charisma is a “personal quality that gives and individual influence or authority over large numbers of people”. (www.dictionary.reference.com/browse/charisma) We’ve all seen charismatic people and they are often universally charming and quick to inspire others to engage, laugh, and rise to their best performance.

As a young leader, maximizing your personal charisma is beneficial for your own performance results and has positive impact on those around you.  Yes, one can be an effective leader by focusing on the business at hand and achieve results without a “happy-factor”.  We have even seen terrible personalities succeed in spite of themselves through sheer prowess and intensity.

However, at ever increasing levels of responsibility, the impact each of us can have on a business is amplified by our impact on those around us and charismatic leaders build more momentum and carry more support through the positive impacts that they have on those around them.  It has been argued that the President of the United States is elected on charisma more so than skills, experience or capability.

Charisma for charisma’s sake is not bad, yet there is a need to have balance with this likeability factor.  An effective leader sometimes has to deal with underperformance and be the bearer of bad news – it goes with the job. Not dealing with these harder parts of the job may increase your charisma rating, but it doesn’t help a business move forward and it doesn’t engender respect from those in the midst of a trouble spot.

Charisma also needs to be metered at an effective volume, for lack of a better term.  Stereotypical charismatic salesmen may be interesting to watch on occasion, but artificial cheerleading and shallow commentary on important topics actually decrease respect and admiration even though the fun-factor may be at a high level.

As with all seven PBT performance traits, charisma does not stand on its own; it must be blended with other important skill areas and experiences and helps bring out the positive all around.  It must be balanced with capabilities in all trait areas and used to package business results in positive fashion.  An empty gift box with nice wrapping may look charismatic.  A positive, uplifting, engaging and supportive approach to delivering all leadership vectors is Responsibly Charismatic and will get aspiring young leaders noticed by their employees, peers and superiors.
