EXEMPLARY LEADER
It is widely believed that leadership is a key trait required for upward mobility in an organization. In order to obtain greater and greater responsibilities, demonstrating the ability to effectively get results from groups of people is a requirement.
Typically these leadership accomplishments begin informally in self-managed work groups trying to accomplish a task. The next level of leadership proficiency is demonstrated through officially managing a group in a supervisor status and again followed by managing a “group of groups” which is the first step where a person manages managers, not simply individuals.
Skills developed during these first few turns of the “leadership pipeline” set the stage for success at higher and higher levels of an organization. Successes in these roles are the critical foundational experiences for future promotability.
Promotion into higher leadership positions brings growing management complexity into the picture. This complexity comes not only in sheer numbers, i.e. headcount and layers, but complexities in assignments (multiple activities executing simultaneously), complexities in diversity (age, race, gender, culture and many other vectors), complexities in geography (varied work locations) and time (teams across multiple time zones or work shifts), etc. Demonstrating the ability to thrive within ever increasing complexity is key for preparing for future promotions.
